OCR: During the dry season, the stems of the cactus shrink as it uses stored water to continue growing. The saguaro is a central part of the Sonoran desert ecosystem. Its branching arms provide a nesting place for hawks, owls and ravens. Flickers and woodpeckers drill holes in its stem - holes which may be later also used by other birds, rodents and reptiles. The saguaro's fruit serves as food for many desert animals.
